2. Sometimes databases are more useful for businesses than personal use. Think of 2 personal uses that you could use Access for and post to your blog.

If you were to write a report over any given topic, you could use Access to retrieve information from a database that you wil use in it. You could also store useful information such as your high school baseball statistics or all of your important contact information. It will all be safely stored by the Microsoft network.

I am really in to military and guns so I decided to do my “timeline” on just that.

Way back in the early 20th century, we were in WWI. The weapons we used back then seem very obsolete compared to what we use today. They were like single action rifles and pistols that had to be reloaded after every shot. Dont get me wrong, they were much more advanced than muzzle and breach loading rifles from the Cival War. They held about five to ten shots in their mag but, like i said, could only be shot one bullet at a time. Nowadays, we have guns that are capable of shooting around 10,000 bullets per minute which is alot. Our artilary weapons have also advanced from practically cannons to Satellite Positioned, Heat Seeking, Death Missiles of Terror. Pretty advanced stuff.

Computers are pretty much what controll all of our “big boy” weapons today. Most of thoso missiles have on board computers that lock them onto there targets. Our military is also based around computers, whether its GPS, communication, weapons, intel,… many things. Back then, they were not in existance, so they didnt really hep them out at all. Ha Ha

Based on what I know, I fell that we are going through reletively the same amout of changes as they did. I think this because we come up with new tools and electronics that help everyday life and make it a little better just like they did. Ours might be way more advanced, but they are created in the same intentions.

I think that there are effects on humans from rapid advance, but they are mostly for the best. I would definatly rather have rapid advance than none at all. New technologies like highly advanced cell phones, laptops,… make it easer than ever to find information and communicate. Distance relationships are very easy with a simple webcam, (you can actually see the other person.)
We need tech advancement to keep superior, i feel.

To start, I played Invest Quest. It was very simple and asked fairly simple questions. I got all of the questions right on this one and chose it because the invest in the name caught my attention first. Next i played Invasion of the Hackers. I figured it wold ask questions to avoid hackers. I missed a few of these questions. Then, I played Spam Spam Slam! It gave good ways to become victim to a scam. I got most of the questions right. Last i played Beware of Spyware. It gave signs of spyware and how to avoid them. It was very easy and i got all of them right. Overall, a good, easy activity.

How would you like to see technology used in your high school classes?

Currently, we already use technology in many ways in my high school. We take many tests and research many things on the internet. I would like to see it more adept to student use, not how teachers/admin see it fit.

Do you think games and/or simulations or blogs or wikis could be used effectively in high school classes?

Yes, definatly. We play Jepordy games on the smart boards at school, but that is about it. We don’t use blogs or wikis. All of the communication stuff is pretty much blocked. But I could definatly see it being used as a very valuable tool. I even bet grades would go up because people would rely less on teacher given information and could just hit up the wiki to get help, kinda like an FAQ.

Post specific answers in a blog post titled chapter 10 discussion to the questions in the chapter’s Issue section about online voting.

1. Would you prefer online voting to voting at a polling place?

I would rather go to a polling place to vote. It seems so much more secure and ethical. That is how it has been done for years and I think it should remain that way.

2. Do you think online voters would disproportionally vote for Republicans?

I don’t fully understand how where you vote would have an effect on who you vote for. Unless the Republican party is the one supporting online voting I don’t think it would be one sided either way.

3. Should online voting be available only to specific groups, such as the elderly voters and military personnel stationed abroad, who currently have trouble reaching polling places?

Yes, that it a fully different scenario. This is actually a very fragile topic because I don’t want to be seen as hippicritical by saying perfectly able and healthy people need to get their butts out and vote at a polling place while military people over seas and elderly can vote from their station or own homes. What I am willing to say is that military services overseas should have the ability to vote online over a secure network.

Discuss exposure that you have had to an information system directly. If you’re having trouble thinking about something, think about roles you have in life – especially as a student and as an employee possibly. In your various roles, you are a part of an information system. Describe your role, the info system, and your part in the info system. You can discuss more than one role.

The term information system (IS) sometimes refers to a system of persons, data records and activities that process the data and information in an organization, and it includes the organization’s manual and automated processes. Computer-based information systems are the field of study for information technology, elements of which are sometimes called an “information system” as well, a usage some consider to be incorrect.

Personally, i think that I am not just exposed to the system, but very well part of it. With that said I believe that I am not only an “Input” to the system, but also an “output”. I am given information by my teachers, peers, boss that can pass to others after I have comprehended it into my own brain. Once I have the information, I can spread it as much as I would like. It will stay in my head for a very long time.

I chose to research the military weapons of America and other dominant countries. I found that, over any other country, the American army uses a larger span of hand weaponry than any other. Our military branches issue over 14 different infantry weapons. The next closest is Russia with 10 different weapons. We also use a large assortment of turrets and cannons of high caliber and high power that are very large and are normally mounted on aircraft or naval ships. I really am into guns and other weaponry yet, I was unaware of these numbers.

How does your personal computer fit into the big picture of using the Internet?

My personal computer is only one of 62 million+ American computers accessing the Internet. I can’t even imagine that it is one of x (Unknown Number) worldwide computers accessing the Internet. I compare my computer to the internet as one capillary in the Internets anatomy. It is small and fragile, but is connected to the whole system just the same.

What kind of connection do you typically use and what is something you learned about other types of connections? At home, I have Satellite Internet. I find it it be very unreliable at times and slow. On a regular basis, it is very use able and acceptable. It is also very expensive. Compared to DSL or cable Internet, it has nothing to offer. I can’t even play XBOX live using it. The others are much faster, cheaper, and more reliable. They also offer much lower latency levels, which you need for gaming.

What security issues do you need to be aware of when using your computer at home ?

I use a series of precautions when I use the internet at home. For starters, I run Windows Vista, which automatically notifies me when an unknown program is attempting to execute. Then, I have Windows firewall to protect from unwanted guests. I have an anti-virus to scan and delete malicious files and Mozilla Firefox which blocks unwanted pop-ups. I’m sure that I am not completely safe, but if anything happens, I can simply run a back-up.

From urban legends to phony e-mail, the Internet brings users into contact with unreliable information on a regular basis. Share an example of times when you have encountered “Internet myths.” How can you verify the accuracy of data on the Internet, and Internet Myths in particular?

Until I started using Mozilla Firefox, I was recieving tons of pop-ups telling me that if I “click here,” I will recieve a free X-Box, Ipod,… which is very annoying. The only way to get these items for “free” is to click on the add and go through a process of signing up and paying for magizene subscriptions, credit reports, car loan consultations, and a whole bunch of stuff I am not interested in. Overall, those are very weak in my oppinion.

Spend some time surfing the Web looking for sites that you consider well-designed and those you consider poorly designed. What characteristics do well-designed Web sites share? What common mistakes do poorly designed sites make? Provide us a URL of a well-designed site and one from a poorly designed site.

Personally I think that musician’s friend is a very well designed web site with good search results and good security while paying. (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/) On the other hand, insturmentpro, is poorly put together with horrible support and shaky security measures.  (http://www.instrumentpro.com/)

Most well developed websites do not feature unwanted pop-ups and advertising on the sides. Most poor websites will accept money from advertisers to have them allow there pop-ups and annoying advertising.

Create your own Network.

In real life, I have Satellite internet which is kind of lame on a network so I am going to use DSL as my internet type. Iam am going to set up my network to supply internet access to two computers and one XBOX 360. One computer and the XBOX are in one room and the other computer is in another room 20ft away. I am going to purchase the fallowing network items,…

-1 Belkin wireless router ($30)

-1 5 foot ethernet cable ($3)

-1 30 foot ethernet cable ($12)

-1 LINKSYS USB wireless network adapter ($20)

The internet modem and router are located in the room with the Xbox 360 and computer. I will connect the wireless router directly to the modem. From the modem, I will connect the computer and the Xbox 360 via ethernet cable and the other computer via wireless. I will protect it with a WEP key. Each computer has its own printer soI do not need to share a printer over the network. That is pretty much it.

1. Network technology is changing rapidly. What problems do networks still need to solve? Do you think networks themselves will be eclipsed by some other type of technology? If so, what characteristics would it have?

People seem to hack into networks fairly easily. Maybe they should try to develop software they is updated more often to block any sort of hacking. No, no matter what technology is used, i still think it will be classified as a network. If it is majorly updated, lag and slow speed will be unheard of.

2. The Internet has experienced unprecedented growth in recent years and is now part of global life. As the “network of networks,” what special technological and ethical problems do Internet users need to solve? Are the technological and ethical problems any different for those who create technology for the Internet? Do you think the growth of the Internet should be limited?

I think they need to solve the question of what are they going to use the internet for overall. Yes, the creators have to develop the products to meet the needs of the users, not just think them up. No, the internet, one day, in my opinion, should be an endless horizon of knowledge and tools to aid everyone.

3. What is peer to peer (P2P)? You might have to search on the Internet to find out about this? What do you need to use P2P. Can you use P2P within a home with other users in a home such as enabling file and printer sharing? Or is P2P something that you do with others outside a small home network.

P2P is data transfer over a network from one computer to another. You need a product such a Limewire that connects you to other peers to send and receive data. It is something I do with others outside of my small home network.

4. Home networks are becoming increasingly popular. Why would anyone want a home network? What advantages do they offer to home users? What are the drawbacks? Have you set up a home network before, even something as simple as a router for wireless laptops and printers. If so, share your experience.

Home networks make it easier to send and recieve file and to share printers without spending money on separate units. The cost is one setback, you have to buy the equipment and set it up or in some cases, have a technition set it up for you. Yes, I have set up a simple network and I always have trouble with IP and DNS adresses not bridging properly. I have also set up a few that were virtually flawless. :)
